Cast, Don't Carry

I believe most people are familiar with the famous words of Bob Marley when he sings, 'don’t worry about a thing cause every little thing is gonna be alright.’ As tempting as it sounds to throw up our hands and go about life as if nothing affects us, it's often not that simple. The truth is, as we progress on our path in life, we often have more responsibilities, health issues may multiply, and we are either overwhelmed by life or underwhelmed with what we thought life would be. In the midst of our everyday life, it seems there is no place for true rest and surrender.

If you are weary of the weight of life, I want to encourage you in this. We have a more sure promise for our burdens and a secure place to find our rest. We can often be inclined to carry our cares, but in scripture, we’re told to cast our cares on the Lord, not to carry them ourselves.

I’ll be the first to admit that this can be a daunting thing to do. To open our clenched fist, in a way our sense of control over our lives, and give it over to someone else. If that is how you feel, let this be your comfort, you can confidently cast your cares on the Lord because He cares for you. Yes, He cares for you. His intentions toward you are motivated by His fatherly love.

At the heart of true laying down and handing over our anxieties to God is humility. It is the challenge to humble ourselves before the Lord, who is not only infinitely wiser than we are but who is also able to sustain us and relieve us from the load that we carry. We all face troubles that vary on different levels. In a fallen world, it is a reality that everyone lives under. Yet, we serve a God who sees no trouble as too small or too big to bring to Him. He is, after all, the one who has already overcome this world. How wise would we be to submit to Him?

When those anxieties come up, we have two options. We can either move toward them in pride. We do this by taking it upon ourselves to find solutions, depending on our own strength or understanding. Or we can take God at His word and face those trials with humility. That humility starts when we come to the Lord, truly believing that He cares for us and place our burdens down before Him. Be of good cheer, friend. He has overcome this world!

“Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time He may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on Him, because He cares for you.” - 1 Peter 5:6-7

A Prayer for You: Father, my inclination is so often to trust in my own ways and to rely on my own strength. I admit, there are many burdens that I bear that You call me to lay down before You. My prayer, for my dear friend reading this, is that you will open their eyes to the parts of their lives that You are calling them to surrender to You. Help them to come to You in humility, to seek Your face, and to find their soul’s greatest need which is rest in You. In Jesus’ matchless name I pray. Amen.
